Santogold – ‘L.E.S. Artistes’

Santogold – ‘L.E.S. Artistes’

Philadelphia’s Santogold is a mate of MIA, but you wouldn’t know it. Ok, you would – she sounds exactly like her, but here she’s dipping her toe into more mellow musical waters. ‘L.E.S. Artistes’ first surfaced last year on the I Believe In Santogold EP, backing the more obviously MIA-esque ‘Creator’, and it richly deserves a second outing. It has strong overtones of the early-‘80s fag-end of US new wave - when bands like The Cars and The Pretenders were flirting with seriously radio-friendly melody to go with the standard, choppy post-punkisms – and is as addictive as a packet of Fruit Gums.

One Night Only – ‘It’s About Time’

One Night Only – ‘It’s About Time’

These Yorkshire whippersnappers are in danger of being slung into the “polite rock” basket with your Keanes and Snow Patrols, but this single has a bit more pizzazz than their first couple of efforts. Sure, there’s a tinge of Coldplay to proceedings, although it’s more like Coldplay trying their luck at sounding like The Faces. It’s rough around the edges with some rolling piano and good-time guitars, but you wouldn’t hesitate to take it home to your mum. Reminiscent of The Kooks, then. It’s Kooky and not at all bad.
